SEK – Costa Rica

The SEK International School of Costa Rica is located in Cipreses de Curridabat, in the middle of an area of great beauty. It has an area of 36,000 square meters.

In this centenary school, the teaching process begins with eighteen-month-old children, with the unique PLAY GROUP (Maternal) and continues with preschool, primary and secondary education, up to eleventh or twelfth year (to choose the International Baccalaureate) .

It opened its doors in the country in 1988, in the Los Yoses area, in San Pedro de Montes de Oca. He began his classes with seven groups, ranging from preschool to fifth year of Basic General Education. All its levels are recognized by the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education.

Due to the great acceptance that the school had on the part of the families, in 1990 different pavilions were built to respond to the demand of new students and to the existing academic requirements.

The 1991 school year was characterized by the purchase of the land in Cipreses de Curridabat, east of San José, where the Institution’s definitive headquarters in Costa Rica is currently located. And it is in 1992 when the new headquarters opened.

On May 17, 1995, the transfer to our definitive headquarters in Cipreses de Curridabat was completed. And on June 12, 1995, the official opening ceremony took place.

But the needs of the College were increasing and so, during the summer months, the swimming pool and the changing room pavilion were built.

In November 1996 the construction of four classrooms began, which were delivered for the beginning of the new school year. In 1999 two courts were built, one for volleyball and the other for basketball.

Finally, in 2003 the long-awaited Sports Center of the College was built, a national benchmark for its excellent finishes and cutting-edge design.

And in 2011, the school pool undergoes major modernization transformations. In this way, its roofing is made and its surface is expanded to accommodate more public and enable the first-level preschool, primary and secondary school changing rooms, with all the security systems for students.

At the end of 2015 a new building was inaugurated that houses, on its first floor, the modern art, music classrooms and the library. Five additional classrooms and the corresponding health services are built on the second floor.

In 2016, the computer room was modernized and the iMac classroom was created, with state-of-the-art equipment for design, programming and robotics.

From the early maternal age (Play Group), the children are immersed in an excellent bilingual education process. All students, upon completing their elementary school, adequately master English and Spanish, both orally and in writing. Other languages taught at the school are Mandarin and French.

In addition, study and exchange programs are offered with other SEK sister schools, including: the United States, located in Boca Raton, Florida, and Saint Johns’s School, in England. Other international extracurricular activities that students can enjoy are: the Sports and Cultural InterSEK; the White Week in Chile, held in a ski resort, where participants receive classes taught by professionals to learn or practice this white sport, and the “Green Week”, where our school is the host. In this green experience, students can enjoy and learn about the environmental diversity of Costa Rica and the conservation of the environment.

To guarantee the safety and full physical and emotional development of the students, the SEK has an adequate infrastructure. For the little ones, the preschool pavilion has spacious, airy and illuminated classrooms, an amphitheater, a large play ground and large green areas.

The SEK Costa Rica International School guarantees an education of excellence in an atmosphere that encourages the practice of sport and the development of skills in the artistic, technological and values areas.

SEK Costa Rica offers a world-class comprehensive education, in which we seek to BE BETTER every day!
