Secondary Education
Secondary Education is a key stage within the educational continuum at SEK Costa Rica International School, which accompanies students from 18 months of age until graduation, guaranteeing a comprehensive, coherent, and well-structured education throughout their school career.
Students enter Secondary Education in seventh grade. From ninth grade onward, they have the opportunity to choose one of the two curricular pathways offered by the institution: the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) program or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. This choice allows them to take a more active role in planning and managing their own learning, developing autonomy and a sense of responsibility for their educational process.
During this stage, fundamental academic, social, and emotional skills are consolidated, promoting critical thinking, creativity, and analytical abilities within an active, reflective, and meaningful learning approach.
Bilingualism remains a central pillar of education. Several subjects are taught in English, fostering the development of strong multilingual competence and enabling students to function confidently in international contexts. French is also offered as a third language, with the option to certify proficiency through the DELF exams in ninth grade.
Secondary school intentionally integrates technological tools and innovative methodologies to enhance personalized learning and the development of 21st-century skills, such as problem-solving, collaborative work, and critical information management.
As part of our educational approach, the school promotes a smartphone-free environment during the school day. This measure fosters concentration, active participation in class, and the development of social and communication skills, contributing to a more humane, safe, and learning-focused environment.
